Let's debunk some common misconceptions about fitness in pregnancy and postpartum. 

Can I workout during pregnancy?

YES! There are numerous benefits to working out while pregnant for both mother and baby. Studies show that women who work out while pregnant have reduced risk of gestational diabetes. hypertension, and are better prepared for labor and delivery. 

Can I start working out when I'm pregnant if I didn't before?

YES! Pregnant women are often told, "if you didn't do it before pregnancy, don't start now." However, as long as you are not high risk and progressively work into exercise, you can safely begin working out once you get pregnant. 

How soon after delivery can I start working out? 

You can start rehabilitative movements as early as 24 hours after delivery and progressively work into gentle movement during the first 6-8 weeks.  Then, as you feel comfortable, progress back into regular exercise over the next several months. 

How do I start exercising again after baby?

No matter how you delivered, you will likely experience discomfort early on postpartum. The first 6-8 weeks should be focused on deep core activation and protecting your vulnerable pelvic floor. After that time, you can work slowly back into exercise over the next several months. Give yourself grace and respect what your body has done.
